The North Island Honey Story
Regular tourists of New Zealand, Jordan & Gabrielle were always well versed in the magical qualities of Mānuka Honey all the way back from Jordan's touring schoolboy rugby days. Always curious, they began asking themselves why such a remarkable, healthy and sustainable superfood choice was so hard to get in most countries overseas. And with that spirit of curiosity, the North Island Honey journey began.
Why Mānuka honey?
Mānuka honey is a sweet, golden nectar that has been highly prized for its health benefits for centuries which is why we love it here at North Island Honey. The Maori have used it to treat wounds and infections, while European settlers have found it can help with everything from allergies to insomnia.
Mānuka honey is well known for it's wound-healing properties. When applied directly to a sore or wound, it may improve the healing process and decreses pain. Being antimicrobial, Mānuka honey can also support tissue regeneration.
Mānuka honey acts as a prebiotic, being a source of non-digestible carbohydrate known as oligosaccharides. Our bodies can't digest these however the bacteria in our guts can, it helps fuel levels of 'good bacteria' in our digestive system.
Honey and lemon is a well known remedy for colds and sore throats. It has been proven that Mānuka honey is more effective at alleviating coughs in children than over-the-counter man made cough suppressants.
